2023 production at Bristol's Old Vic of the coming-of-age play written by Academy Award winning playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney.
The story centres around confident and gifted Pharus, a young, Black, gay student who has earned his position as a lead soloist. But when his pride is hurt by one of his peers, he falters...The play then takes us on an "electrifying journey through the growing pains of humanity" as we see the boys navigate spirituality, sexuality, race, identity, and brotherhood in their journey to becoming men, all set to a soul-stirring selection of a cappella gospel hymns and spirituals.
It has been described as "a beautiful, joyous play which rejoices in all that it means to march to your own drum."
Khalid Daley starred as JR, one of the boys in the choir alongside Pharus.
The play was nominated for Best Regional Production at the 2024 WhatsOnStage Awards.
