Gwyneth Paltrow starred in the title role in this 1996 film adaptation of the novel by Jane Austen. The adaptation was written and directed by Douglas McGrath.
Set in the early 19th Century, Emma is a young English noblewoman who acts as a matchmaker for her friends and neighbours, whilst ignoring her own desire to fall in love and get married.
All star cast that included Toni Collette as Harriet Smith, Jeremy Northam as Mr Knightley, Juliet Stevenson as Mrs Elton and Ewan McGregor as Frank Churchill. Sophie Thompson starred as Miss Bates, a genteel woman who mixes in high society despite being penniless, whose worst habit is her endless trivial chatter and who is memorably insulted by Emma at a picnic. Sophie's mother, Phyllida Law, played Miss Bates's mother, Mrs Bates.
