2012 Oscar-winning film adaptation of the hit stage musical of the same name.
The story is set during the French Revolution and follows convict Jean Valjean (played by Hugh Jackman) who escapes from prison during his 19 year sentence for stealing some bread and is pursued for decades by ruthless police chief Javert (played by Russell Crowe). Also starred Anne Hathaway as Fantine, a prostitute who Jean Valjean helps and promises to care for her daughter Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) when she tragically dies. Eddie Redmayne played student revolutionary Marius who falls in love with Cosette. Sacha Baron-Cohen and Helena Bonham-Carter also starred as the Thénardiers, a nasty pair of swindling innkeepers.
Several actors from the West End stage production were also chosen to feature in the film, including Gabriel Vick as the revolutionary Feuilly, who featured regularly in the film.
The film won 3 Oscars and 4 BAFTAs, as well as a string of nominations at both. It also won Best Film at the Golden Globes, as well as 2 additional Golden Globes for Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.
