2023 production of Lucy Kirkwood's celebrated play at The Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, directed by Owen Calvert-Lyons. It starred Imogen Stubbs as Rose, a retired nuclear scientist who challenges old friends, Hazel and Robin, to consider what impact their past actions will have on the world.
The Children was hailed as “one of the top 3 plays” in The Guardian’s recent Best Theatre shows of the 21st Century list. It first ran at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2016 and was then transferred to Broadway where it was nominated for Best Play at both the Tony Awards and the Outer Critics Circle.
The play seeks to raise big issues; in particular how people in the future will react to the poisoned legacy of the present. It is a play about social responsibility and whether having children sharpens, or diminishes that.
