Belfast actress Laura Donnelly has been nominated for a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress for her performance in ’The Hills of California’

This year's Tony Award nominations have been announced and they include a well deserved Best Leading Actress nomination for Laura Donnelly for her stand-out Broadway performance in 'The Hills of California'.

Her Tony nomination comes off the back of her Outstanding Lead Performance nomination for a prestigious Drama Desk Award earlier this week.

The Hills of California, which is set in a Blackpool guesthouse in the 1950s and 1970s, premiered in the West End in March 2024, before making its Broadway debut in September 2024. Written by Jez Butterworth and directed by Sam Mendes, it saw Laura playing formidable single mother Veronica, as well as a second role playing Veronica's estranged daughter Joan.

Critics were quick to praise her performance which was described as "utterly magnetizing" (New York Times), "enthralling" (New York Post), "commanding" (Entertainment Weekly) and "the performance of a lifetime" (Vogue).

The ceremony for the 78th Tony Awards is set to take place on June 8th at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by Cynthia Erivo.  See the full list of nominees
