Laura Donnelly stars as the lead in Jez Butterworth's brand new play 'The Hills of California' which is on now at London's Harold Pinter Theatre.
The play, which is directed by Sam Mendes, sees her playing formidable matriarch Veronica, whose 4 daughters have returned to her run-down Blackpool guesthouse in the sweltering summer of 1976 to see their mother on her deathbed. The second scene of the play sees the story shift back 20 years to the 1950s where we see the ambitious younger Veronica who is coaching her 4 young daughters for a vocal harmony group, hoping they will hit the big time. Laura also has a second role, appearing later in the play as daughter Joan as an adult.
The play has been unanimously praised by critics, with particular admiration for Laura's performance -
★★★★★ "a rich, funny, brilliantly layered drama....Veronica is a superb character, brilliantly, painfully played here by Laura Donnelly" - The Financial Times
★★★★★ "Devastatingly moving, bitterly funny, tender, cruel and wise...a performance of brilliant, brittle charisma from Laura Donnelly" - The Stage
★★★★ "What makes the show, though, is Donnelly....Donnelly’s otherworldly presence as Joan electrifies a show that palpably builds in power and ambition as it goes" - Time Out
