Brand new Radio 4 audio drama 'Moorgate' starts this afternoon, Wednesday 26th February, at 2.15pm, concluding tomorrow at the same time.
The two-part series dramatises the events surrounding the tragic tube crash at Moorgate Station in 1975 which instantly killed tube driver Les Newson and 42 passengers on board.
Lorne MacFadyen plays one of the first on the scene, fireman Brian Goodfellow who, armed with a torch and a hacksaw, started to cut passengers out of the devastated front carriage, where there were only a handful of survivors. Brian, along with his team from Clerkenwell Fire Station, endured extremes of stress and danger, with Brian almost dragged to his death at one point.
As well as the forty-three people killed, there were 74 injured in the Moorgate disaster, the worst accident ever on the London Underground in peacetime. The release of the audio drama marks 50 years since the crash which happened at 8.46am on Friday February 28, 1975.
The drama is written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran. In 1975, Laurence was a young journalist working for the Sunday Times, charged with investigating how the disaster occurred. His father had been a passenger in the second carriage and was among the fatalities.
Both episodes, entitled 'Outside' and 'Inside' are also available on BBC Sounds after broadcast.
