Tom Stoppard’s ‘Leopoldstadt’, starring Arty Froushan as Leo, has won Best Play at this year’s Tony Awards

The 76th annual Tony Awards took place on Broadway last night with Tom Stoppard's Olivier Award winning play earning 4 awards including Best Play. 

The play is set in Vienna and follows the trials of the Jewish Merz family from the end of the 19th Century through to the 1950s.  Arty Froushan stars as Leo in the in the final act which is set in 1955.  His character is a London-raised cousin of one of the main protagonists who has scant regard for his Jewish heritage and his own childhood in Vienna. As the final act unfolds he is reminded of the past and the price paid by his family over the previous half-century. 

The play also won Best Direction, Best Featured Actor in a Play and Best Costume Design, the most awards of the night.

The play previously won an Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2020, before its Broadway run which started in October last year and finishes on 2nd July. It features a cast of 38 actors and is directed by Patrick Marber.

The Tony Awards took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York last night.
