BAFTA nominated, BIFA winning actor Samuel Adewunmi is best known for their leading role in the critically acclaimed BBC One drama series ‘You Don’t Know Me’ in which they played Hero, a young black man accused of murdering a drug dealer. Their outstanding performance earned them a Leading Actor nomination at the 2022 BAFTAs as well as a Best Performance nomination in the MOBOs the same year.
Their breakthrough role was starring as the lead, Femi, in the feature film ‘The Last Tree’ which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, winning them the Most Promising Newcomer award at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) as well as a nomination for Best Actor. They also received two National Film Awards UK nominations and a place on the Screen International Stars of Tomorrow list.
In 2024 they starred in the 8-part Channel 4 adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams’ hit novel ‘Queenie’, playing Frank, Queenie’s best friend and confidant. Prior to that they starred in the 6-part ITV thriller ‘Angela Black’, playing the mysterious Ed Harrison, who has been hired to kill wife & mother Angela (Joanne Froggatt) by her abusive husband.
In 2023 they had a major role in the Disney+/Marvel Studios TV series ‘Secret Invasion’, alongside an impressive cast that included Samuel L. Jackson, Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman; and in 2021, they starred as Carcer Dun in the BBC America adaptation of Terry Pratchett's The Watch.
Other notable credits include ‘Doctor Who’ (BBC One), feature films ‘Born A King’ and ‘The Hatton Garden Job’, ‘Lucky Man’ (Sky), ‘Prime Suspect 1973’ (ITV) and the first series of Emmy-nominated BBC crime drama series ‘The Missing’.
In 2023 they made their professional stage debut starring in the world premiere of ‘Trouble in Butetown’ at the Donmar Warehouse. The following year they made their West End debut in ‘A Mirror’ at the Trafalgar Theatre.
Samuel grew up in Camden and has a generic London accent, which they can dial up or down as necessary. An M.L.E accent also comes easily (as heard in ‘You Don’t Know Me). They also have an excellent Nigerian accent (their mother is Nigerian) and can speak Yoruba fluently. Other accents include Estuary (as heard on podcast ‘The Cipher’), general American (as heard on stage in ‘Trouble in Butetown’) and Middle Eastern (as heard in ‘Born A King’).
