Critically acclaimed play, first performed at London's Gate Theatre in 2017, The Convert is set in Zimbabwe (or Rhodesia as it was then known) in 1896 and tells the story of Jekesai, a young black woman who is forced by the only black Roman Catholic teacher in the region to convert to Catholicism, change her name, wear European clothing and speak only in English.
Mimî M. Khayisa starred in the lead role playing Jekesai, winning an Offie (Off West End Theatre Award) for her performance.
Written by Tony-nominated Danai Gurira the play is described as "a compelling exploration of a pivotal moment in history, when resisting the invading Western culture could mean death."
