Jason Hogan will be on stage in London's West End tonight playing Arneth in the National Theatre's 'Dr Semelweiss' which stars Mark Rylance in the title role.
The play is about maverick Hungarian doctor Ignaz Semmelweiss, one of the 19th Century's greatest doctors whose research saved the lives of many millions of mothers during childbirth.
After a "smash hit" (Daily Mail) sold-out run at the Bristol Old Vic, the "beautifully bold" (The Times) production opened this summer at the West End's Harold Pinter Theatre.
Jason Hogan is the understudy to 3 of the main roles, which includes Franz Arneth who he will be playing on stage tonight, Friday 22nd September. Arneth was Dr Semeweiss's most loyal disciple. In a recent interview Jason talked about how much he enjoys playing Arneth, describing him as "a modest genius who looks up to Semmelweis, having been his most loyal disciple, and is a driving force behind the motor of the story, which is great fun to play".
He went on to talk about working with Mark Rylance, who co-wrote the play as well as starring in it, saying, "Mark’s way of keeping scenes fresh and different every night is an actor’s dream – it’s what theatre should be; alive and current, constantly responding to its environment. So really, it’s been a blast! I can’t wait to get on stage – I think Mark, Tom and Sonia Friedman have built a fantastic theatrical company, which feels like a little creative family in which we’re free to explore and play. It’s going to be a very fun run!"
The "compelling new drama" (The Telegraph) is directed by Tony Award winning Tom Morris who won Best Director for War Horse on Broadway.
Tickets are still available for the play which runs until Saturday 7th October.
