Biblical comedy 'The Book of Clarence' is released in UK cinemas tomorrow, Friday 19th April. It features Micheal Ward as Judas Iscariot and Tuwaine Barrett as Samson who appear alongside an A-list cast that includes James McAvoy as Pontius Pilate, David Oyelowo as John the Baptist and Benedict Cumberbatch as Benjamin.
The film is set in AD33 with LaKeith Stanfield starring as Clarence, a struggling Jerusalemite who tries to gain fame and fortune by convincing people he is the new Messiah.
Micheal's character Judas is one of the most vocal Apostles in dealing with Clarence, who proposes that Clarence free the gladiator slaves to earn his place as the 13th Apostle. This is, of course, a fool's errand, and between that and Judas later being paid to identify Messiahs, he maintains his villainous streak from the Bible.
It is directed by BAFTA winning Jeymes Samuel who won the 2021 BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for his first film The Harder They Fall.
The film was released in January in the US and reviews have been excellent with Movie Nation saying "Samuel’s film is an embarassment of acting riches, laugh-out-loud funny when it wants to be and thought-provoking when it dares to be", with Micheal Ward's performance described as "slick and sinister". Collider praises the "brilliant ensemble cast, standout performances, and a sharp script, The Book of Clarence is a cinematic feast for the eyes, ears, and mind that challenges viewers to think about faith".
