Siena Kelly is to star in brand new play ‘1536’ which premieres at the Almeida in May

Siena Kelly is to star in a brand new play which premieres at The Almeida in May.  '1936' is set in Tudor England and follows 3 women in Essex who gather in a field to discuss the gossip from London about a clash between King Henry VIII and his wife Anne Boleyn.

Meanwhile, closer to home another rumour spreads, leading the women to see parallels between their own ordinary lives and the royal drama taking place in London. The play is described as a "fiendishly smart and funny new play which asks whether female solidarity can survive in a world where barbarism and misogyny are state sanctioned."

Siena Kelly is best known for starring roles in Domino Day and Adult Material.  She will star alongside Liv Hill (Miss Austen) and Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education).

The play was written by Ava Pickett, as part of the Genesis Almeida New Playwrights, Big Plays Programme.  It won the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and was commended by The George Devine Award for its “sparkling dialogue and savage undercurrent”.

Tickets are on sale from this week for members, and go on general sale on Tuesday 4th March.
