Sọpẹ́ Dìrísù stars as Mr Malcolm in Regency romantic comedy Mr Malcolm's List which premieres in cinemas across the UK today, Friday 1st July.
Mr Malcolm is an eternal bachelor who is on the hunt for his perfect wife. To help him in his quest he writes a list of attributes he is looking for in his perfect woman. However when he spurns the advances of Julia (Zawe Ashton) she decides to seek her revenge by introducing him to her best friend Selina Dalton (Frieda Pinto). Little does he know that it is a set up, with Selina posing as his perfect woman, then planning to reject him once he's fallen in love with her, giving him a taste of his own medicine.
In a recent interview Sọpẹ́ explained that previously he was never particularly drawn to period dramas saying, "It was because of the absence of people who look like me. I don’t think I was conscious of that as a decision when I was younger. As a family sitting down to watch movies we didn’t know that’s why we weren’t watching them, but in hindsight I can’t help but think it was a factor. So it’s really wonderful to be a part of a project that will hopefully change that for lots of different global majority families across the world going forward".
