British-Nigerian actor Sọpẹ́ is quickly establishing himself as an internationally renowned actor, best known for his role in Sky Atlantic’s Gangs of London. He plays undercover cop, Elliot Finch, in the crime drama set in present day London, starring in both Series 1 and 2 as well as the upcoming third series.
In 2020 he starred in the Netflix movie ‘His House’ for which he received both a Best Actor nomination from BIFA & a ‘Critic’s Choice Super’. And in 2021 he was nominated for BAFTA's prestigious Rising Star Award.
It has just been announced that he will star alongside Jude Law and Jason Bateman in Netflix's 'Black Rabbit' which will probably hit our screens in 2025.
In 2023 he guest starred in Series 3 of the Apple TV+ BAFTA nominated spy drama series 'Slow Horses', playing Sean Donovan, the former Head of Security at the British Embassy in Istanbul, who is on a mission for revenge against MI5. When interviewed about Sọpẹ́'s role, the show's creator Will Smith said, "He’s phenomenal...I loved working with Ṣọpẹ́. He's already a massive star and he's gonna be an even bigger star. I mean, he's off, he's away". Also in 2023 he voiced busker's cat 'Tabby McTat' in the BBC animated adaptation of the Julia Donaldson children's book of the same name.
In 2022 he starred in the title role in the romantic Regency period drama film 'Mr Malcolm's List', also starring Freida Pinto and Zawe Ashton. He played Mr Malcolm, an eternal bachelor who has put together a list of attributes he wants in a wife, which backfires when an ex seeks revenge and decides to give him a taste of his own medicine. He also appeared in 'Digging', the fifth and final short film in Film 4's 'Foresight' series of short sci-fi films.
In 2021 he starred in the romantic period drama film 'Mothering Sunday' alongside an all star cast including Olivia Colman and Colin Firth. Critics described the film as 'exquisite' (The Times) and 'remarkable' (The Telegraph), with the Daily Mail calling it 'gorgeous, passionate and beautifully crafted'. Also in 2021 he starred in dark comedy 'Silent Night' alongside Keira Knightley and Matthew Goode. Also in 2021 he starred in 'Tides', a sci-fi thriller film directed by Tim Felhbaum.
Previous film credits include war drama, Sand Castle, The Huntsman: Winter's War, as well as Ariel Vromen’s sci-fi thriller, Criminal.
On television, most notably, Dìrísù was seen in AMC’s Humans and in Netflix’s series, Black Mirror, for which he received the ‘Rising Star Award’ for the Screen Nation Film and Television Awards. He was selected as a Screen International ‘Star of Tomorrow’ and in 2017 received a Commendation at the Ian Charleson Awards for his performance in the title role of 'Coriolanus' at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Sọpẹ́'s native accent is London and with his Nigerian heritage he can do a great Nigerian accent. He used a South Sudanese accent in His House.
