Pilot episode won a BAFTA in 2020, followed by a six-part series on BBC Two in 2021. The show is written by comedian Sophie Willan, is based on her own childhood and set in Bolton. It went on to win the BAFTA for Best Comedy Programme in 2022 with Sophie winning Best Female Comedy Performance. A second series ran in 2024.
The show follows aspiring actress Alma, who grew up in care, and takes a thoughtful but hilarious look at poverty, addiction, family and a woman with dreams. Sophie starred as Alma, alongside Siobhan Finneran as Alma's mother Lin and Lorraine Ashbourne as Joan, Alma's grandmother.
Amy Gledhill had a major role playing Alma's hilariously downbeat acting class friend Lesley in series 1 & 2. Matilda Freeman played Alma's mother Lin as a teenager in series 1.
