Daniel Ryan is to play Steve Holland, whilst Adam Hugill will reprise his role as Harry Maguire in the upcoming BBC drama series ’Dear England’

The much-anticipated BBC drama version of hit National Theatre play 'Dear England' has announced its cast members, as it commences filming in the South of England.

Alongside Joseph Fiennes as England manager Gareth Southgate and Jodie Comer as team psychologist Pippa Grange, Daniel Ryan will star as Steve Holland, former assistant England manager.  Adam Hugill will reprise his role as defender Harry Maguire, a role he played at the National Theatre in 2023.

The 4-part drama is based on James Graham's hit National Theatre play about Gareth Southgate and the England men’s football team, and is due out in 2026.  The play won two Olivier Awards in 2024, including Best New Play, and was also nominated for a number of awards including Best Actor for Joseph Fiennes.  The play was first staged in 2023, before transferring to the West End later that year, returning for a limited run at the National Theatre in 2025.

The official synopsis for the series says "With the worst team track record for penalties in the world when he takes over as manager, Gareth knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt to take England back to the promised land. The country that gave the world football has delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can’t the England team win at their own game?"

No release date has been announced yet but it is expected to be out in 2026.
