The second series of double BAFTA winning comedy 'Such Brave Girls' kicks off tonight on BBC Three at 10pm. The sitcom sees the return of the dysfunctional Johnson family, 40-something mum Deb and her two daughters Billie and Josie, whose family motto is "Ignore, repress, forget". Josie and Billie are played respectively by real-life sisters Kat Sadler (who also wrote the series) and Lizzie Davidson.
The first series won two gongs at the 2024 BAFTAs: for Scripted Comedy and Emerging Talent.
This new series sees Deb obsessing over marrying off her eldest daughter Josie so that she can achieve her mother's greatest ambition, becoming a "kept woman". However Josie is more interested in dating women. Meanwhile Billie has started an affair with Graham, a much older, and already married, man, played by Daniel Ryan. Graham is terrified of being caught by his neurologist wife and can only meet in the mornings or he's too tired for sex.
See a short preview of Daniel as Graham.
In a recent interview Lizzie spoke about the dynamic of Billie's relationship with Graham saying,
"We get to explore the power dynamic in age-gap relationships; usually it’s the man in the driving seat but, here, Billie’s in complete control and is the one taking advantage." She went on to talk about how much fun she had working with Daniel, "He’s the sweetest guy. We immediately set boundaries, so nothing was ever awkward, then just ended up laughing the whole time."
Matilda Freeman also has a small role in the series, playing Graham's daughter Lucy.
As with the first series, this new series has garnered glowing reviews from critics -
★★★★★ "startlingly brilliant...scary, lairy and perfectly portioned comedy. It is knockout TV" - The Guardian
★★★★ "If anything, the bar has been raised for the second. .... It’s quite an achievement that something so defiantly and deliberately joyless can be so horribly funny" - The Times
★★★★ "bleakly funny, refreshingly realistic and never tries to reduce mental illness into a fridge magnet-style slogan – brave indeed" - The Independent
The series is directed by The InBetweeners and Everyone Else Burns star Simon Bird.
