Sharon Duncan-Brewster stars as Miss Angie in new Hulu/Disney+ historical drama series ‘Washington Black’ which is available to stream from today

New historical drama series 'Washington Black' is released today on both Hulu and Disney+. The 8-parter is based on the much-loved, bestselling Booker Prize shortlisted novel of the same name by Canadian author Esi Edugyan.

Washington Black follows the incredible journey of George Washington ‘Wash’ Black (Ernest Kingsley Jr.) who, after being accused of murder, flees from a Barbados sugar plantation on an extraordinary flying machine, beginning an epic adventure around the world, pursued by a deadly bounty hunter. Eventually, he arrives in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he becomes the protégé of Medwin Harris (Sterling K. Brown), de facto Mayor of Black Halifax, falling in love with an aristocratic British woman.

Sharon Duncan-Brewster has a leading role as Miss Angie, who runs the local store in Black Halifax. Originally from Trinidad, Miss Angie's store is a local institution and she is a backbone of the community.

Also stars Tom Ellis, as wealthy abolitionist inventor Titch Wilde who accompanies Wash on his journey, Charles Dance as James Wilde, Titch's father and sugar plantation owner and Iola Evans as Tanna Goff, an aristocratic British bi-racial woman who falls in love with Wash, despite her engagement to a wealthy Halifax businessman.

"a surprisingly fleet adventure, as buoyant and unpredictable as its hero’s own globe-trotting travels" - The Hollywood Reporter
"Sumptuous costuming, location filming, and all-around solid performances seal the deal on a series that’s earnest, hopeful, and thrilling, but with just enough weight to keep one foot grounded in reality" - The Daily Beast

All 8 episodes are available to stream from today, 23rd July.
