Simon Stone's modern take on the classic Greek tragedy 'Phaedra' has received emphatic praise from critics for his bold and "audacious" new production.
The Independent (★★★★) calls it a “sparky, hilarious and lightning-quick” play that “skewers middle-class hypocrisy, colonialism, and the supreme, all-destroying selfishness of sexual obsession”. Likewise The Evening Standard, (★★★★), declares it “gob-smackingly audacious” and “a must-see”. Whilst The Times (★★★★) writes that it is “stunningly sharp and a “hugely entertaining evening”.
Oscar-nominated Janet McTeer takes the title role, with Paul Chahidi playing her husband, Hugo, who is described by The Times as a "despairingly decent" man.
Simon Stone is best known for his Young Vic production of ‘Yerma’, and is known for rewriting stories from the roots up and giving them a bracingly modern setting.
Phaedra runs at The National's Lyttleton Theatre for a limited season until Saturday 8th April. Tickets are available now.
Paul Chahidi is available for voiceovers from Anthea Represents. Click his image for his profile page and voiceover showreel.
