David Morrissey stars as lead detective DCS Ian St Clair in Sherwood which starts on BBC One at 9pm tonight.

David Morrissey stars as DCS Ian St Clair in the BBC's new 6 part crime drama Sherwood which is based on the true story of two separate killings in Nottinghamshire in 2004.  The murders tore the ex-mining community apart, inflaming the divisions sparked during the 1980s miners' strike and led to one of the biggest manhunts in British history.

As well as David, the series boasts an impressive cast which includes Lesley Manville as the wife of one of the victims and Claire Rushbrook as her sister.  Philip Glenister plays DI Kevin Salisbury who is sent from the Met Police to help Nottinghamshire police with the investigation, opening old wounds within the local police force.  Joanne Froggatt and Adeel Akhtar also star.

In a recent interview David Morrissey talked about writer James Graham, who was brought up in the Nottinghamshire community where the killings took place.  He said, "Before I read the script, I was attracted to the whole package. I'm a big fan of James Graham's work. I loved his play Ink and This House and I thought Quiz was brilliant. I mean, he is just a fantastic writer, I've always wanted to work with him".

He went on to talk about his character who is the lead detective, tasked with finding a link between the killings, saying "He has to confront many demons, not just demons that are being played out amongst everybody else, but amongst himself as well, inside of himself. So, he's the law, but he's also someone who is trying to hold on to a moral centre."  He also talked about how the series feels very relevant for a modern audience saying, "I think divided community is really alive at the moment. The idea that we are being pushed to the extremes and how a community lives amongst itself, with people with very different views and opinions living side by side."

The BBC has just released a new extended trailer for the series.

The first episode will premiere on BBC One at 9pm tonight, Monday 13th June, with the second episode following tomorrow night.  The remaining episodes will run on Monday & Tuesday nights for the following two weeks, concluding on Tuesday 28th June.
