David Morrissey stars as DCS George Oldfield in 'The Long Shadow', a brand new ITV drama which lands on our screens tonight, Monday 25th September. Oldfield was the 3rd detective to take on the investigation into the infamous Yorkshire Ripper serial murderer Peter Sutcliffe in the 1970s and early 1980s.
The 7-part true crime drama tells the story of the 5-year hunt for the serial killer. It focuses on the lives of the victims who crossed his path, as well as the police officers at the heart of the investigation.
The official synopsis reads, "with the victims, their families and the survivors at the heart of this series, The Long Shadow brings a new perspective to a well-documented story...One murder has the power to cast a long shadow and this case plunged a whole society into darkness. For every victim, there were friends and loved ones. For every police officer, there was the burden of failure - of near misses and guilt – and the knowledge that as they failed to find their man, more women continued to suffer."
The drama comes from Lupin and Litvinenko writer George Kay, and Time and Sherwood director Lewis Arnold. The ensemble cast also includes Toby Jones, Daniel Mays, Lee Ingleby, Jill Halfpenny and Katherine Kelly.
Watch the trailer and tune in tonight at 9pm on ITV1 and weekly every Monday. Each episode will also be available to stream on ITVX after broadcast.
