David Morrissey to star in the BBC's new crime drama Sherwood inspired by the true story of two separate killings in Nottinghamshire two decades ago

The BBC is yet to announce the release date for its latest prime-time crime drama Sherwood, but we shouldn't have long to wait. The series promises to be one of the highlights of the BBC's schedule this year.  The 6-part series is set in Nottinghamshire in 2004 when two separate killings tore the ex-mining community apart, inflaming the divisions sparked during the 1980s miners' strike.   The killings led to one of the biggest manhunts in British history.

David Morrissey leads an all-star cast which includes Robert Glenister, Lesley Manville, Joanne Froggatt, Claire Rushbrook and Stephen Tompkinson.  Morrissey's character, Detective Chief Superintendent Ian St Clair, is the lead detective from the Nottinghamshire Police force who is tasked with finding a link between the two killings. However tensions escalate when DI Kevin Salisbury (Glenister) is sent from the Met Police to assist with the investigations.

The show is written by award winning screenwriter James Graham (Finding Neverland, Ink, Quiz) who grew up in the Nottinghamshire village where the series is set.

Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama said: “In blending real and fictional events, James has created a penetrating, heartfelt and purposeful thriller which exposes the tensions and fault lines at the heart of modern Britain. Sherwood is set to be an exceptional series by one of our greatest dramatists and we are proud to be bringing it to BBC1.”
