The 3rd series of ITV's tense crime drama The Tower is back on our screens tonight, Monday 2nd September.
It sees the return of Gemma Whelan starring as no-nonsense police officer DS Sarah Collins who clashes with DI Kieran Shaw, played by Emmett J. Scanlan, over an undercover operation which threatens to de-rail a murder enquiry.
Ella Smith also returns to her role as junior cop DC Elaine Lucas, whose initial rocky relationship with Collins in series 2, saw them bond at the end of the series.
Once again the plot is inspired by the novels of Kate London - this time 'Gallowstree Lane' - which picks up the drama almost 2 years after the end of series 2. The story sees Collins investigating the brutal stabbing of a teenage boy, but her investigation is soon at cross purposes with an undercover operation led by Shaw to bring down a south London drug lord, Shakiel Oliver. The focus of Sarah and Kieran’s conflict is 15-year-old Ryan Kennedy, who witnessed the fatal stabbing but is also a key part of Shakiel’s inner circle.
At a recent press conference, Gemma talked about the struggles her character faces in this series, "She sees the vulnerability and the lack of solution she can offer. The helplessness I think is what really drives her mad - she’s trying so hard, but she just hits brick wall after brick wall of silence, denial, tension, violence or risk." She also talked about her on-screen battles with Emmett's character Kieran, "Emmett’s an energy builder – no acting required for his burst. It’s very heated. They’re both very protective of themselves and their ways and the people in their private lives and how it bleeds into work."
In turn Kieran spoke about how he enjoyed his scenes with Gemma, "I definitely enjoyed sparring and dancing with Gemma. My only regret is that I didn’t get more".
Watch the dramatic trailer and tune in tonight at 9pm on ITV1. The remaining 3 episodes will be shown on consecutive nights across this week. All 4 episodes are also available now on ITVX.
