Gemma Whelan is to star as Charlotte Brontë in a brand new play at the National Theatre next year. 'Underdog: The Other Other Brontë Sister' is described as "an irreverent retelling of the life and legend of the Brontë sisters". It’s a play about sisters and sisterhood, love and jealousy, support and competition.
It will be the world premiere of the play by Sarah Gordon, winner of the 2022 Nick Darke Writer’s Award. It is co-produced with Northern Stage, whose Artistic Directer Natalie Ibu will direct.
The play will open on 27th March and run until 25th May at the National Theatre's Dorfman Theatre, on London's South Bank. It will then transfer to Northern Stage from 7th to 22nd June.
Tickets go on general sale on Thursday 9th November. Watch the teaser trailer.
