The BBC's big new crime drama series 'This City is Ours' starts this Sunday night, 23rd March, on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm. It stars Hannah Onslow and Darci Shaw who both have major roles in the 8-part Liverpool-set series, which stars Sean Bean.
It tells the story of organised crime gang leader Michael (played by James Nelson-Joyce) works alongside his best friend Ronnie Phelan (Sean Bean) to import Columbian cocaine into Liverpool and beyond. However, his life changes when he falls in love with Diana, played by Hannah Onslow, and for first time in his life, he sees beyond the day-to-day and into a future together. However when internal clashes threaten the stability of the gang he has to decide where his loyalties truly lie.
Darci Shaw plays Melissa Phelan, Ronnie's daughter.
In a recent interview for the BBC Hannah divulged a bit more about her character and the love affair at the heart of the show, "Her and Michael’s relationship is very strong, they really do love each other so much. They are both at a big turning point in their life and want to start a family together. I don’t think Diana knew she could ever feel this way about someone, and I think the same goes for Michael. Their relationship is really special, beautifully written and it has been a complete joy to do it with James."
She also talked about how much she enjoyed learning the Scouse accent, "I loved it. I love the accent so much, I think it’s gorgeous. I did a lot of work on it...luckily I was just around so many scousers on set so if there was anything I was struggling with, help was always on hand, and scousers will always tell you the truth! It also helped just being in Liverpool and soaking it all up. It’s an amazing city."
She finished by describing the show as "a drama that I can honestly say I have never seen on television before. There is something for everyone and I think although the show heavily explores a really brutal world, it also has enormous heart."
Watch the trailer and stream on BBC iPlayer from Sunday.
