The 5th season of ITV's Brighton based crime drama 'Grace' kicks off on Sunday night, 6th April, at 8pm, with the first of 4 brand new feature length episodes. John Simm and Zoë Tapper are back in their leading roles playing DS Roy Grace and his girlfriend, mortuary technician Cleo Morey.
ITV has revealed that the new episodes will begin on a heartbreaking note for the couple, as they have lost the baby that Cleo announced she was expecting at the end of the previous series.
Loreece Harrison is also in this new series, playing Lauren Packham in the 3rd episode entitled 'Need You Dead'.
As always, the series is based on the novels by Peter James and the 4 new episodes are called 'Dead If You Don't', 'Dead at First Sight', the aforementioned 'Need You Dead' and lastly 'Find Them Dead'.
John Simm revealed in his press interview with ITV that he enjoys playing Grace because there is always conflict and he's never fully settled or happy, "nobody is interested in watching a detective who is happily married and happily solving cases because he’s really good at it. Something needs to happen for the drama to work. Happiness might be lovely for Roy, but that’s not interesting for the viewers!". He went on to reveal " trust me, there’s loads more to come. Nothing is ever tied up - just when you think it’s all done it’s not, there’s plenty more in store. This series ends on a bit of a cliffhanger too –there’s a huge storyline that we will pick up in series six and the stakes get higher every season."
Zoë Tapper was also interviewed and talked about how hard it was to film the scenes where Roy and Cleo find out they've lost their baby saying, " She and Roy are a very strong couple and though the pregnancy was an unexpected surprise, they were really thrilled with the news. So to see Cleo in this very low place was really sad, I certainly felt that. There was a very different mood to those scenes, it was very moving and poignant to be part of." She also talked about how, despite filming in a mortuary, she would still struggle to see a real dead body, " It’s so weird because you find yourself telling your friends that you’ve been working with dead bodies all day, it must sound so strange. It does become weirdly normal, and I’m very used to seeing horrible wounds in front of me, but I’m also used to the person sitting up and chatting to me between takes!"
Watch the series 5 trailer and be sure to watch the first episode which airs on ITV and ITVX on Sunday 6th April at 8pm. All previous 4 series are also available to stream on ITVX.
