Award-winning actor Narinder Samra narrates a brand new docu-drama on Radio 4 every day this week. 'Bhopal' tells the tragic true story of the world's worst industrial disaster in central India in 1984.
Tens of thousands of people died when lethal methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide plant in the city of Bhopal in December 1984. More than 3,000 people died within the first two weeks of the leak, many tens of thousands were to die later. Today, nearly 40 years on, people in Bhopal are still dying.
This is the story of one man, Bhopali journalist Rajkumar Keswani, who predicted the disaster two years before it happened, after his friend who worked at the plant died in mysterious circumstances. His investigation pitted him against corporate and political powers, as well as indifferent media and public opinion, but despite this he never gave up. Sadly his predictions came true. This is the first time his story has been told.
The documentary is on Radio 4 every day this week at 1.45pm, with an omnibus edition on Friday night at 9pm. Or catch up each day on BBC Sounds.
