Phaedra, starring Paul Chahidi, opens at the National Theatre tonight

Simon Stone's modern re-imagining of the classic 'Phaedra' opens at London's National Theatre tonight (Wednesday 1st February).

It tells the tragic tale of Phaedra who, after years of focusing on her political career, turns her attentions to her personal life, as buried lust and loneliness surface with the re-appearance of her step-son. Her actions threaten to ruin everything she has worked for.  Oscar-nominated Janet McTeer takes the title role, with Paul Chahidi playing her husband, Hugo.

Although this is Paul's first returnn to the stage for 5 years, he previously earned Olivier and Tony Best Supporting Actor nominations for playing Maria in the West End and Broadway all male production of Twelfth Night.

Simon Stone is best known for his Young Vic production of ‘Yerma’, and is known for rewriting stories from the roots up and giving them a bracingly modern setting.

The play opens tonight at The National's Lyttleton Theatre with a limited season running until Saturday 8th April.  Tickets are available now.  Watch the teaser trailer
