Hulu has commissioned a nine episode series based on the Man Booker listed novel by Esi Edugyan. Set in the 19th Century, it will follow the tale of an 11 year old boy George Washington "Wash" Black who is a slave on a sugar plantation in Barbados. After a shocking event he is forced to flee and finds himself on a ship headed for Virginia. The story follows his journey and his eventual arrival in Nova Scotia where he settles as a free man, becoming a renowned artist, scientist and inventor.
Sharon Duncan-Brewster will play the part of 'Miss Angie', a woman who left Trinidad to travel to Nova Scotia where she becomes central to the community by setting up her own store.
Filming is due to commence on the series in Canada and Iceland next month.
