Sharon Duncan-Brewster is currently starring in 'Death of England: Closing Time' at the National Theatre's Dorfman Theatre. The play is the third instalment in the trilogy from writers Clint Dyer and Roy Williams, a series of state of the nation plays about the black and white working class experience.
The play's opening was delayed when actress Jo Martin had to withdraw due to illness, with Sharon heroically taking her place with only 1 week of rehearsals. She plays London matriarch Denise who has a love-hate relationship with Carly (Hayley Squires), her white "daughter-in-sin", a relationship which has been described by the Evening Standard as "deep, detailed and combustively alive".
Giving the play 4 stars, the Evening Standard goes on to say, "The alchemy that Duncan-Brewster and Squires have cooked up together in a week marks a fitting end to a uniquely unlucky, uniquely brilliant piece of theatre".
Broadway World also gave the play 4 stars describing the production as "theatre at its bravest".
