The Odyssey is a national multi-venue production, told over 5 parts with each episode re-creating Odysseus's epic journey from Mount Olympus to home, via Hades.
The show has been running across 2023 and culminates this weekend on the Olivier Stage at the National Theatre with a full-scale musical production for the 5th and final episode.
Sharon Duncan-Brewster plays the leading role of Odysseus, supported by a full professional cast as well as a company of 160 local community performers from across the UK.
The production was created to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the National Theatre's Public Acts Partnership which brings together artists and performers from across communities to create ambitious large-scale productions. The episodes have taken place at partner venues in Stoke-on-Trent, Doncaster, Trowbridge and Sunderland. The final instalment, a musical version of the Greek hero’s journey to and through the underworld, brings together performers from each of the previous productions as well as a cohort of London-based community artists.
The Odyssey: Episode 5 - The Underworld is on all weekend from Saturday 26th to Monday 28th August.
