Biographical drama 'Till' tells the emotionally charged true story of civil rights activist Mamie Till-Bradley who became a leading light in the 1950s and 1960s US Civil Rights movement, following the brutal murder of her 14 year old son Emmett by a gang of white supremacists whilst he was on holiday in Mississippi. The film covers the court case that followed and portrays the horrifying racism that she faced in trying to get justice for her son.
The film had it's premiere at the New York Film Festival in October 2022, and was subsequently widely released in the US. The film is out in UK cinemas today, Friday 6th January.
Dr Who star Tosin Cole plays Medgar Evers, a fellow civil rights activist. Danielle Deadwyler stars as Mamie Till-Bradley, and Whoopi Goldberg plays the part of Mamie's mother, alongside co-producing the film. The film is written and directed by Chinonye Chukwu.
Tosin recently talked about how he prepared for the role, explaining how he was "fortunate enough to talk to his wife, Myrlie...the way she described him, you really got a clear sense of his energy...She gave us a lot of information that you couldn’t really get off a page or a video clip. That was beautiful and really helped me shape the character.”
He also talked about how the role made him feel, "It made me appreciative of the people that came before us. It made me so appreciative of people who were fighting for us and just taking all the arrows for us. Like, they’ve got a back full of arrows just to protect us".
Till has been nominated for a number of awards at upcoming ceremonies including the BAFTAs, The Black Reel Awards and the Satellite Awards, all taking place next month. Reviews have been unanimously positive with the Guardian giving 4 stars and calling it "a fierce portrait of courage and a sombre study of the human cost involved in resisting this kind of barbarity" and Empire also awarding 4 stars, calling it an "absorbing, slow-burning study of a broken woman’s politicisation".
This month also sees Tosin playing the lead in the re-make of the classic 1990's film 'House Party'. He stars as Damon, who whilst working as a house cleaner, decides to throw a huge party at one of his client's houses. House Party is released in the UK on Monday 30th January. Watch the trailer.
