'The Worst Man in London' has been selected to compete in the Big Screen competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam which starts today, Thursday 25th January. The screening on Sunday will be the international premiere of the film.
The film, which is about Victorian art dealer and blackmailer Charles Augustus Howell, stars Edward Ashley as painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti. It charts the art dealer's relationship with key figures during the pre-Raphaelite era, in particular Rossetti. Howell even convinced Rossetti to dig up the poems that he buried with his wife Elizabeth Siddal, so he could sell them.
The title of the film comes from Arthur Conan Doyle who made Howell a character in the Sherlock Holmes stories and christened him 'The Worst Man in London'.
