Mathew Horne is one of this country’s most recognised and loved comedy actors, thanks to his memorable performance over the last two decades playing the lovable Gavin Shipman in the BBC’s forever-popular ‘Gavin and Stacey’, starring opposite James Corden, Joanna Page and Ruth Jones. The show ran for 3 series between 2007-2009, charting the ups and downs of Gavin and Stacey’s love story which captured the hearts of the nation. Such was the demand for more that the show returned with Christmas specials in 2019 and 2024, achieving record audience ratings and is now the most watched scripted TV show this century.
‘Gavin and Stacey’ has won 3 BAFTA Awards including the 2008 Audience Award and the ‘Must See Moment’ Award in 2020. The show is also the recipient of an RTS Award and a National Comedy Award. Mat was nominated for Best Male Comedy Newcomer at the 2007 National Comedy Awards as well as Best Actor in a TV Series at the 2020 National Film Awards.
He is also known for his role as eccentric headmaster Shaquille Fraser in the long-running BBC comedy series ‘Bad Education’, set in a dysfunctional school in Hertfordshire, also starring Jack Whitehall. He played various comedy roles in ‘The Catherine Tate Show’ between 2004-2009, in particular playing Jamie, the ever-patient grandson of ‘Nan’, a character who went on to have her own spin-off TV series in 2015 and film ‘The Nan Movie’ in 2022, with Mat starring in them both, winning ‘Best Supporting Actor’ at the National Film Awards for the latter.
Between 2016-2022 he starred in the Sky/Acorn comedy drama series ‘Agatha Raisin’, appearing in all 4 series opposite Ashley Jensen’s titular character as her best friend and fellow detective Roy Silver. He also had a leading role in the fourth series of the Channel 4 BAFTA nominated comedy drama ‘Teachers’, playing teacher Ben Birkett.
His TV credits are extensive and include highlights such as a guest starring role in the 8th series (2023) of the BBC’s dark comedy anthology series ‘Inside Number 9’; playing Private Joe Walker in the 2019 Dad’s Army reboot ‘Dad’s Army: The Missing Episodes’ and Gold’s ‘Newark Newark’ which was set in a fish & chip shop in Mat’s home county of Nottinghamshire.
He has had roles in a number of films such as playing Mr Grace in the BBC movie ‘Are You Being Served’, which aired in 2016 in a homage to the classic TV sitcom, playing Dad in ‘Horrid Henry: The Movie’ and the 2023 award-winning independent film ‘Bolan’s Shoes’.
