Karl is a recognisable comedy actor & stand-up comedian, best known for his long-running role as the ‘Landlord’ in the ITV2 award-winning comedy ‘Plebs’, set in Ancient Rome. He is also known for playing one of the leads in much loved Channel 4 medical comedy series 'Green Wing' in which he starred as Dr Martin Dear. Audible brought the series back in audio format in 2024 with all the main actors from the original series including Karl, alongside Olivia Colman and Stephen Mangan.
He memorably played Head of Infrastructure, loner Graham Hitchins, in ‘Twenty Twelve’, the BBC’s irreverent take on the 2012 Olympics, alongside a star-studded cast which included Hugh Bonneville, Jessica Hynes and Olivia Colman. He is known for a string of roles in many well-loved TV comedies such as Channel 4’s ‘Hang Ups’ with Stephen Mangan, playing the therapist in ‘GameFace’ (also C4) and Sky One’s black comedy ‘Sick Note’ with Nick Frost, Rupert Grinch & Lindsay Lohan.
In 2023 he had roles in The Sister Boniface Mysteries (UKTV/Britbox) as well as Malory Towers (CBBC). Prior to that he appeared in the BBC Two comedy series 'The Witchfinder'. He also appeared in the BBC series ‘Life’.
His film credits include a key role in the 2019 Universal Pictures romantic musical comedy movie 'Yesterday', alongside Lily James and Himesh Patel and he also appeared in the 2018 Sky One comedy movie ‘The Queen and I’ starring Samantha Bond. He played Graham Frampton in Steve Coogan's 2013 Alan Partridge movie ‘Alpha Papa’.
In 2024 he was nominated for an Offie for his "fragile, tragic" performance in the Hampstead Theatre's play 'Grud', playing an alcoholic father nicknamed 'Grud' by his daughter.
He is also a writer and in 2002 he was part of the team who collected a British Academy Award for Best Television Comedy Series for scripting 'The Sketch Show.'
He has performed at the Edinburgh Festival, toured the UK with his one-man show Mr. Tinnamen's Travelling Medicine Show & more recently with, "Karl Essentially/The Book Tour" in 2019. He is lead singer of the band ‘Grifter Kid and the Midnight Raiders’. See videos below.
He has a light Suffolk accent from where he grew up, yet he neutralises well.
