Adam James is a recognisable and respected leading actor who has had roles in some of the most popular TV series and films from the past decade, including 'Wicked', 'Vigil' and 'Day of the Jackal'.

2024 was a busy year with highlights including playing Foreign Secretary Jeremy Whitelock in Sky’s hugely successful TV adaptation of ‘The Day of the Jackal’, which starred Eddie Redmayne. He played ‘Popsicle’, father to Ariana Grande’s character Glinda, in the blockbuster musical ‘Wicked’ (and will reprise the role in Part 2 which is out in late 2025).  He also had a major role in the box-office hit, romantic drama film ‘We Live In Time’ which starred Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh.

2023 saw him star as Colonel Tracy St. George in the Apple TV+ 19th century period drama ‘The Buccaneers’ and he had a leading role playing American art dealer Jack Turner in the first series of ITV/Britbox period drama series ‘Hotel Portofino’ in 2022.  He will return to both roles when the new series of these two shows are released in 2025.

2022 also saw him with a major role in the ITV crime thriller series ‘The Suspect’ playing the dubious best friend of Aidan Turner’s lead character. He was also part of an impressive cast in Netflix thriller series ‘Treason’ which starred Charlie Cox as a senior agent investigating the poisoning of the Chief of MI6, with Adam playing his friend and fellow agent Patrick Hamilton.

In 2021 he starred in the BBC’s Emmy-winning, BAFTA nominated hit drama series ‘Vigil’, set on board a nuclear submarine which becomes the subject of a murder investigation.  He played Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander Prentice, second in command on board the vessel, starring opposite Suranne Jones and Martin Compston.

He had a major role as literary agent Julian in Michaela Coel's critically-acclaimed, Emmy winning, black comedy series ‘I May Destroy You’, which also won Best Mini-Series at the 2020 BAFTAs.  In the same year he played John Bellasis in ITV period drama ‘Belgravia’, from Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes, reprising the role in the series sequel in 2025.

He played serial cheater Neil, next-door neighbour to Suranne Jones’ leading character, in the popular BBC One psychological thriller series ‘Doctor Foster’, which ran for two seasons and won a number of awards including a National Television Award, a Royal Television Society Award and a BAFTA. He returned to the role in 2020 in the BBC’s spin-off series ‘Life’, also from writer Mike Bartlett.

His impressive list of TV credits also include ‘Mr Bates vs. The Post Office’ (ITV), ‘The Long Shadow’ (ITV), ‘You’ (Netflix), ‘Deep State’ (Fox), ‘Dalgliesh’ (C5), ‘Extras: Christmas Special’ (BBC), ‘Home From Home’ (BBC), ‘Secret Diary of a Call Girl’ (ITV), ‘Silent Witness’ (BBC), ‘Hotel Babylon’ (BBC), ‘Miranda’ (BBC), ‘Hustle’ (BBC), ‘Waking the Dead’ (BBC), ‘Ashes to Ashes’ (BBC) and ‘Band of Brothers’ (HBO/Sky).

Adam has worked extensively on stage, appearing in ‘Consent’ at the National Theatre, which later transferred to the West End, and ‘An Enemy of the People’ (Chichester Festival Theatre). Notably he worked with Doctor Foster writer Mike Bartlett on the original stage production of ‘King Charles III’ at the Almeida, as well as its subsequent West End and Broadway transfers, for which Adam was awarded the Clarence Derwent Award for Best Supporting Actor. The play was later adapted into a film for BBC Two, in which Adam returned to his role as the Prime Minister, with the film earning two BAFTA nominations, including Best Single Drama.

As well as the aforementioned ‘Wicked’, ‘We Live in Time’ and ‘King Charles III’, he has had roles in a number of other films including ‘Johnny English Strikes Again’ and the Gerald Butler/Gary Oldman thriller ‘Hunter Killer’.

Adam is from London and speaks with a Neutral accent and can switch easily to RP.  He is an American Dual Citizen and does a completely natural Standard American accent (as heard in ‘Wicked’, ‘You’, ‘Hotel Portofino’), as well as a number of different regional American accents including Southern (as heard in ‘Band of Brothers’), West Coast LA and Texan.
