Instantly recognisable for his varied and extensive TV career, Aidan McArdle is an Irish actor best known for roles in shows such as ‘Showtrial’, ‘Ridley’ and ‘Mr Selfridge’. 

In 2024 he had a major role in the second series of BBC courtroom drama series ‘Showtrial’ playing Patrick Norris, as well as starring in popular Irish crime thriller series ‘Blackshore’ (on UKTV & Sky in the UK).  He also returned to screens as convicted killer Michael Flannery in the second series of ITV’s police procedural drama series ‘Ridley’, a role which he first played in series 1 in 2022.  2024 also saw him star as Albert Einstein in Netflix’s docu-drama ‘Einstein and the Bomb’.

He has recently been cast in an undisclosed role in ‘Sherlock and Daughter’ for Discovery+, which is due out in 2025 and will star David Thewlis as Sherlock Holmes and Dougray Scott as Moriarty. 

Other recent major roles include a featured role in the 2023 BBC Cold War spy thriller ‘Spy/Master’, set in Romania in the late 1970s, the 2021 Channel 5 thriller series ‘The Holiday’ and the hit BBC drama series ‘The Trial of Christine Keeler’, in which he played Roger Hollis, Director General of MI5 and a suspected Russian spy. And in 2021 he starred as Zac in the international spy drama series ‘Red Election’, shown on Disney+ in the UK. 

His long list of TV credits also includes ‘Father Brown’ (BBC One), ‘Tell Me Everything’ (ITV), ‘Miss Scarlet and the Duke’ (PBS/Alibi), ‘Strike Back’ (Sky), ‘Delicious’ (Sky) and Channel 4’s BAFTA nominated sci-fi series ‘Humans’. In 2016 he had a prominent role playing Sean Healy, the defence lawyer to Jamie Dornan’s character Paul Spector in the third series of the critically acclaimed, BAFTA nominated BBC/RTÉ crime drama series ‘The Fall’, which also starred Gillian Anderson. 

He is often recognised for his starring role in ITV’s long-running drama series ‘Mr Selfridge’, in which he played the abusive and villainous Lord Loxley.  Prior to that he had major roles in BBC legal series ‘Garrow’s Law’, BBC comedy series ‘Beautiful People’ (opposite Olivia Colman) and Channel 4’s 19th century drama series ‘The Mill’. 

His film credits include ‘Freud’s Last Session’ (2023), IFTA nominated ‘Deadly Cuts’ (2021) ‘Born a King’ (2019), ‘The Professor and the Madman’ (2019) and the Oscar winning 18th century period drama ‘The Duchess’ which in which he played the Duchess’s socialite friend Richard Sheridan, starring alongside Keira Knightley, Dominic Cooper and Ralph Fiennes.
 
His theatre work includes his “outstanding” leading role as Hermann in Tom Stoppard’s epic 2021 West End production of ‘Leopoldstadt’.  Also ‘Our New Girl’ at Dublin’s Gate Theatre in 2020 and ‘This Beautiful Village’ at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre in 2019.  He is an associate artist of the RSC and also the youngest actor to ever play Richard III when he played the role as part of the RSC's 'This England: The Histories' series in 2001. 

Aidan is from Ireland (specifically Dublin) and speaks with a native Southern Irish accent.  He easily slips into a neutral or RP accent and much of his work uses these accents.
