Welsh-born Richard is best known for his starring role in Hinterland, as well as prominent roles in Poldark & Gangs of London.

In 2024 he will star as the co-lead, opposite Elen Rhys, in a brand new Welsh crime drama series 'The One That Got Away' for S4C.   The show will be shot in Welsh and English and is set in a small town following the shocking murder of a nurse.

In 2023 he starred as forensic scientist Dr Colin Dark in the BBC One four-part crime drama 'Steeltown Murders' about the investigation into the disappearance of 3 women in Swansea in the 1970s, which 30 years later led to a murder conviction. Also in 2023 he had a major role in Channel 5 drama series 'Dalgliesh' and also appeared in Channel 4's 'Consent'.

In 2022 he starred as new band member Morgan Jenkins in the feature film 'Fisherman's Friends: One and All', the sequel to the 2019 hit comedy about a group of sea shanty singing fishermen.  Also in 2022 he guest starred for a few episodes of 'Casualty' as dodgy anaesthetist Jonty Buchanan. In 2021 he played C.S. Lewis's father, Albert, in 'The Most Reluctant Convert' about the author of the Narnia Chronicles.

He appeared in season three of 'The Crown' on Netflix, playing Fred Phillips in the episode about the Aberfan mining disaster, as well as in 'Endeavour' on ITV.  He has a string of other TV credits including 'Requiem', 'Larkrise to Candleford', 'Collision', 'Bleak House', 'Silent Witness' and 'Spooks'.  He has starred in two Welsh BAFTA winning films including 'Gwen' in 2018 alongside Maxine Peake and Mark Lewis-Jones and 'Last Summer' which won the Welsh BAFTA in 2019 for 'Best Film'.

In 2018 he starred in a lead role in the sold out National Theatre & West End production of 'Home, I'm Darling' described by Time Out as 'piercingly funny' and 2024 saw him back on stage at Chichester's Festival Theatre playing 'visionary firebrand' Welsh MP Nye Bevan in 'The Promise'.

He has also starred in a BBC Documentary ‘My Grandfather’s War’ where he traced the journey of his grandfather who went to Spain to fight fascism in the Spanish Civil War.

His native accent is Welsh, and he is a fluent Welsh speaker.
