Stephen has an extensive list of TV and movie credits spanning the last 20 years.  

In 2024 he appears in two major shows for Apple TV+; crime drama series 'Criminal Record', opposite Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo in which he stars as Leo Hanratty, the husband of Cush Jumbo's character; and 'Masters of the Air', the Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks epic series about a group of WWII bomber pilots, in which he played Major Marvin 'Red' Bowman. 

He is currently filming for major new Paramount+ drama series 'Little Disasters', starring opposite Diane Kruger, Emily Taaffe and Shelley Conn, due out 2025. 

In 2023 he played the leading role of John Reith, the legendary 1920s Director General of the BBC, in 'When Winston Went to War with Wireless' from celebrated writer Jack Thorne, at the Donmar Warehouse. 

In 2022 he starred in the ITVX period drama 'The Confessions of Frannie Langton' set in Georgian London which tells the story of a Jamaican slave girl sold to the opulent mansion of George Benham (played by Stephen), but events take a horrible turn when Benham & his wife are found murdered and Frannie is accused and sent to prison.  

Other recent TV credits include major roles in the BBC's factual drama ‘Responsible Child’, the TV adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel ‘The Child in Time’ (also BBC), alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, and Netflix series ‘The One’.  He also appeared as Edward Fitzgerald QC in 'Anne', the ITV dramatisation of the Hillsborough disaster. 

Further highlights include a lead role in BBC drama ‘The Last Post’, Season One and Two of ‘War of the Worlds’, and the 2019 ‘Downton Abbey’ movie. 

He appeared alongside Dame Judi Dench in the 2019 feature film ‘Red Joan’ and also played Winnie The Pooh illustrator E. H. Shepard in the 2017 film 'Goodbye Christopher Robin'.  

He is particularly known for playing Irwin in the original History Boys cast on stage in both the West End and Broadway, as well as in the film version.  He also starred as Kev/Steve in the 2011 award winning production of Clybourne Park at London's Wyndham's Theatre in the West End.
